How to Properly Use Tire Shine
One of the first thing people notice when they look at an automobile. Okay, maybe that’s not exactly the case, but it is true that a good looking pair of tires can make or break a person’s first impression of your care. Therefore, it’s imperative that you leave people with a good first impression by keeping your tires in the best possible shape.
Of course, a lot of people think that if they soap up their tires once in awhile that they’re good to go. Unfortunately, that’s not exactly the case. Most of the time, tires look old because they’re not just dirty but also dry, and washing the tire won’t fix that problem. No, you have to get right to the main problem and use a tire shine product to revitalize your tires and make them look new again.
The one thing worth mentioning, however, is that no matter how good of a tire shine product you buy, it’s not going to do anything unless it’s used correctly. That’s why we’ve decided to assemble this guide for you. In this guide, you’ll learn how to properly use tire shine on your tires and restore them back to their former luster. Okay, let’s get to it.
1. Gather Together Your Supplies
The first step to getting your tires back on point is to gather all of the equipment and supplies that you are going to need. Don’t worry, it’s not an extensive list of things that you’ll need but the tools you do need are important. Here is a short list:
- Tire Shine
- A Bristled Brush
- Tire Dressing Applicator
- 1 Bucket For Soapy Water
- 1 Bucket For Clean Water
- A Garden Hose
- A Dry Towel
- Rubber Gloves
- A Sponge
2. Clean Up Your Tires
The next step is getting the tires clean in the first place. Which means that you are going to need to clean them up a little bit before you shine them up. Start off by hosing all of your tires down with the water hose, making sure that you get them good and wet. Now go ahead and grab your two buckets. Add some degreaser to one of your buckets and use the hose to fill it up. In the other bucket, go ahead and add clean water.
Dip your bristled brush in the water and degreaser bucket and spread the liquid all over the tire as you scrub them. Once you’ve thoroughly scrubbed the tire, rinse it off with water from the clean water bucket. Do this until all of the tires are clean. Now, you’re ready to move on to the next step.
3. Dry Your Tires
Take the towel and dry off all of your car or truck’s tires. If there’s any excess moisture on the tires, then wait until it’s fully dried before proceeding to the next step. While some products are designed to be used on both wet or dry tires, it’s always best to start with a dry tire. That way, you don’t end up dripping or slinging product unnecessarily.
4. Apply the Tire Dressing
Before you proceed any further, make sure that you’ve read all of the safety precautions and instructions that came with your tire shine. Make sure that you’re completely familiar with them. If there are any discrepancies between these instructions and your tire dressing’s instructions, the shine’s instructions take precedence. With that being said, use the tire applicator to apply the product. Be sure that while you’re doing it, you’re wearing rubber gloves.
5. Let the Tire Dressing Sit
You should let the tire shine sit on your tires as long as the product packaging tells you to let it sit. Don’t remove it too early or leave it on too long. This will take approximately 15 to 20-minutes. When this time has elapsed, you are now ready to move on to the final step.
6. Wipe Off Excess Product
Now’s a good time to wipe up any excess tire shine that may be sitting on the surface of the tire.
After all, you don’t want road gravel, dust, and brake dust clinging to the excess product that may be lingering on your shiny new tires. If you thoroughly clean your tires in the first place, then the chance of there’s little chance of excess product remaining on the tire. That’s because tires tend to absorb this product easily, but it’s always worth double-checking.
Additional Tire Shine Tips
While the above procedure is sufficient to handle most tire cleaning and shining jobs, there are a few other things to consider. I’ve included some additional tips below that will help you get the most out of your tire dressing experience.
- Check Weather First – You don’t want to be in the middle of washing or shining your tires when a thunderstorm moves in an interrupts the process. Not only will this result in wasting your time, but it will also mean that you’ll have to repeat the process all over again when the weather has cleared. Therefore, it’s important to check the weather first.
- Wash the Car Before the Tires – It doesn’t make much sense to dress your tires and then wash your car, so go ahead and wash the car before you wash and dress your tires. This will prevent you from ruining all of your hard work before anyone has even had a chance to see your shiny tires.
- Avoid Getting Tire Dressing On Your Car – You should also avoid getting tire dressing or any tire cleaning product on your car. Tire cleaners can really do a number on paint and clear coats, so it’s important to avoid getting it on your car’s body.
- Use Proper Equipment – Don’t try to skimp on the equipment you use for shining up your tires. Don’t try to use Brillo pads to clean your tires, but instead use bristled brushes that are designed for tire cleaning. Also, don’t skimp on the safety equipment. You’re definitely going to want to wear safety gloves, and maybe even safety goggles when you’re cleaning up your tires.
